THE ESSENTIALS

What It Is.
How It Works.

Indexed universal life (IUL) is permanent life insurance with a death benefit and cash-value account. Interest credited to selected indexed strategies is calculated using a market index, subject to the policy’s cap, participation rate, spread, floor, and other terms. The policy does not invest directly in the index.

WHO IT MAY FIT

Designed Around
Real Responsibilities.

01

Clients with a genuine permanent death-benefit need

02

People who understand flexible funding requires active monitoring

03

Long-term planners comfortable with non-guaranteed illustrations

04

Clients who can fund consistently and tolerate policy complexity

HOW THE POLICY WORKS

Four Parts.
One Clear Picture.

01

Fund the policy

Premiums first support policy charges and insurance costs; remaining value may earn interest under available crediting strategies.

02

Select crediting options

Indexed or fixed accounts may be available. Index performance is translated through contract formulas—not received directly.

03

Review annually

Interest credits, costs, funding, loans, and changing assumptions affect how long the policy can remain in force.

04

Manage access

Loans and withdrawals can reduce policy values and death benefits and increase lapse risk, especially during lower-crediting years.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

Where It
Can Help.

  • Permanent protection when sufficiently funded
  • Flexible premium and death-benefit options within contract limits
  • Index-linked interest-crediting potential
  • Downside crediting floor may limit negative index credits before policy charges

IMPORTANT TRADEOFFS

What To
Understand.

  • Caps, participation rates, spreads, and charges limit results
  • A 0% crediting floor does not mean the policy cannot lose value after charges
  • Illustrated non-guaranteed values may not occur
  • Underfunding, loans, or rising insurance costs can cause lapse

COMMON PLANNING USES

Built For A
Specific Purpose.

01

Permanent family protection

02

Legacy planning

03

Business continuity needs

04

Supplemental long-term accumulation when suitable

QUESTIONS TO ASK

Know Before
You Decide.

Is IUL invested in the stock market?+

No. The policy credits interest using a formula tied to an index; you do not own the index or its component stocks.

Can the cash value decline?+

Yes. Even when an indexed strategy has a 0% crediting floor, policy charges, withdrawals, and loans can reduce account value.

Are illustrated returns guaranteed?+

No. Illustrations contain guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements. Review both and test lower-crediting assumptions before deciding.
